San Donà di Piave, Venice : Christmas Lights and Market

San Donà di Piave. Christmas time.

It's been 3 years we're living in this little city that belongs to Venice Province (Provincia di Venezia), but this is the first time we are able to visit its Christmas Market and have fun under the Christmas lights and trees.
Winter is kinda nightmare for me and I guess for all parents out there (especially special needs parents) because germs are everywhere and runny nose and kinds of stuff are nothing but a pain in the ass. It's easier to recount days without cold, cough and blocked nose plus fever. For Dario alone, I am super cautious for his immune-compromised syndrome and I have certain tips that I keep for myself and doing it every winter. Check my previous post: Winter Joy tips for special needs.

So, this year we have planned to go sightseeing at San Donà's Downtown which basically less than 2 km away from my house. Downtown at Christmas time can only be reached by feet, no vehicles allowed, not even a bicycle. Christmas in Italy is super special, every town (commune) across the country are having their own Christmas Markets and exhibitions. On this occasion, you could see lots of hand-made artisans things, street art and food, mini-concerts and etc. The pedestrian area is adorned with Christmas ornaments and lights. Each streetlight is accompanied by a small speaker that plays along Christmas Songs. At the Piazza, we usually can see a carousel merry-go-round and sometimes there is an area where you can go ice-skating.

In San Donà alone, this year we can see L'isola di Natale (Christmas Island), Villagio di Natale (Christmas Village), Christmas Market and ice-skating area. On 24th December that also known as Vigilia di Natale, we can see a mini-musical concert held by some volunteers. There is also a mini luna park: merry-go-round and mini train choo-choo.

L'isola di Natale is located by the town hall, the main piazza (square) of the city and stretched to the historic center which the Christmas market takes place.

The ice-skating area is right in front of the town hall and facing the real giant Christmas Tree.

Dario was awestruck seeing lots of lights and people, but he remained wary for the rest of the sightseeing (he was too afraid to try merry-go-round and mini train, but he liked the Christmas trees)

I was mesmerized
We spent like 3 hours going around to see some shops, exhibitions and the mini-musical concert. We saw lots of beautiful kinds of stuff for sale: hand-made dolls, handicrafts, photo frames, hand-made sweaters,  pom poms and shawls etc. Prices have skyrocketed though which kinda normal because on this very occasion (before Christmas), everything would be pretty much more expensive.

Ah yes, there were also street food stalls that looked so appetizing: Fritelles. Sadly, I am on my diet, so I skipped them this time...

The Christmas Market was so crowded

Handicrafts
We had so much fun going around San Donà on Christmas Eve. We just realized that we didn't need to go far (like to South Tyrol) to see the famous Italian Christmas Markets, there are right next door.

Anyway, we still hope that one day we could spend Christmas and New Year's Holidays in South Tyrol, the mighty Italian Dolomites: Skiing, spending nights wandering around their Christmas markets and other fun things. We just have to wait Dario's getting bigger and stronger and can stand below zero temperature!

The brightest star in the sky is you, baby
After all, Merry Xmas everybody. Send our warm regards to your beloved ones and families. On this very occasion, let's bring more kindness to the world.

All the joy and happiness for us all...

5th wedding Anniversary : You are The Origin of Love

Love is a drug and you are my cigarette
Love is addiction and you are my Nicorette
Love is a drug like chocolate like cigarettes
I'm feeling sick, I've got to medicate myself

Mika - Origin of love
Today, 5 years ago I married the love of my life. He is the best thing ever happened to me, and through hardest time, I realized he is the only shoulder I could cry on.

Each year on the anniversary day, I tried to make a special post, because why not? Love has to be cherished! Last year anyhow, I missed though, I must have forgotten or I had lots of things to do (medical appointments, therapies, rehabilitation etc for Dario)

My husband is pretty much the antithesis of what I wanted in men. I'd always wanted a dominating man, the one that could lead me to be a better person, partner, and later: a wife. I didn't realize that I undermined myself, I always thought women are inferior to men and they should subjugate themselves so the relationship could be 'perfect'. I was dead wrong, in order for a relationship to work, both sides got to have their voices heard. Men and women are equal, I feel sorry for myself that I used to see myself lesser than men. I am so thankful that I didn't end up marrying a man like what I wanted before, instead, I married a perfect man who always listens, cares and puts me on the top of everything.

***
"Hubby, I've got a terrible headache, can you make a cup of tea for me please?" I pleaded
"Okay," he said
Then he came with a cup of tea, a sachet of painkiller and a warm kiss. He massaged my head so I could feel better..

At one lovely Sunday Morning, as a night owl I always wake up later than the rest of the family (they're a 100 percent of Early bird), I found the sink was empty, and some brioche were ready on the table, and he said: "Would you like some brioche for colazione?"

Those are some examples of how my life is blessed, little things which got me faith that love is more than just words. Of course, we sometimes fight like every other normal couple in the world, but we always stick to rules: that we are not going to bed before settling everything, we are not going to be angry to each other till morning, and whatever happens, apologizing to one another is a must.

Did I mention that we both love jokes? Tbh, I am a serious person but my husband is the complete opposite of me, a cheerful and fun person, I guess that is why I fell in love for him back then. Who doesn't love a funny and kind man right? Irresistible!

Anyway, Happy 5th Wedding Anniversary for us. Here are more years to come with lots of love, compassion, and laughter!!!

Invisible Disability: Let's talk about it, Shall we

International Disability Day 2018 has just passed some weeks ago, and we have a lot to talk about of this day, its significance and after all, about an invisible disability.

Dario is considered having a minor disability or handicap. Once in three years, we have to do some kind of assessments to determine whether or not Dario get social allowance and assistance, and this year we have done the recent one. It turned out Dario has a positive result, and the panel of doctors approved that he needs to get all the benefit from the government.

We, as parents, have mixed feelings about this. One side we are happy that financially we are helped by the government (Italy is one of the countries with the highest rate of tax in the world by the way) but on the other side we are upset because, in front of a bunch of strangers, Dario is really not capable of doing what he should be doing at this age. Perhaps, My husband and I are pretty delusional about his milestones, not that we didn't see him struggling but from our point of view his overall condition is way better than the previous one. Outsiders do not understand this, doctors as well. For them, Dario's diagnosis alone should put him on the list of people with a disability no matter how fast his progress is.

Eventually, disability isn't always about a wheelchair, mental retardation or physical defects but it's more about the limitations of one's movements, senses or activities.

Some people contacted me or commented on my social media saying that Dario looks fine, seems like nothing wrong with him. I explained that if you met us in a real life, you'd see the fact that he is different from the other kids. They said "maybe his limitations are not apparent to the onlookers" Yup.

Then, does Dario has a visible or invisible disability? I am not sure how to say but I can't deny he has a disability. He needs help, he is not at the normal pace of his own milestones, his heart and lungs are his biggest limitations and above all, he gets tired quite easily. Imagine when you wanted to do many things but your body just can't cooperate, you just feel hopeless. That's what happens with my precious one. Yes, he can walk but he barely runs (he has a flat-foot and 20° of curved backbone), yes he can eat by himself but I am still there to make sure he eats otherwise he gets skinnier (he eats mostly with food fortifier because he needs more calories, due to his heart condition). Not to mention his difficulty to understand things, he is a slow learner, not gonna lie about this, but he can be taught. Later we found out that he has a cognitive difficulty that belongs to 22q behavioral issues. So, if I have to decide whether my son has a visible disability or invisible disability, I just don't know, I let people decide.

Talking about disability in general, people associate this word with something rather physical, an ongoing physical challenge one might face for example being in the wheel-chair. People with disability are mostly judged by being 'disabled' which refers to being 'lesser' than anyone else which is not true because every person has their own purpose and value, has their own uniqueness that can't be compared to the others.

Furthermore, invisible disability is even harder to describe because the challenges might not be obvious to the naked eyes. People with invisible disability are mostly frowned upon because they look perfectly normal. Some even call them 'attention seekers' or 'liars'. The facts that they have an invisible disability is quite frustrating because who wants to have such limitations, right? There's no way a person could fake a disability.

Everyone with a disability is different. They have their own challenges and needs along with their abilities and attributes, and the only way we can know about that is by listening to their own stories instead of judging 'Oh, but he looks fine'!?

Buone Feste From Vicenza

So December has just started and cities across Italy are still busy preparing Christmas lights and ornaments. Christmas is the most important holiday in Italy (as we all guessed of course), and in December you would see lots of Mercatini di Natale aka Christmas Markets. These markets exist to enliven The Christmas Celebration. You will find such high-quality kinds of stuff that most are hand-made by artisans. The most famous Christmas markets in Italy are probably the ones in Trentino Alto-Adige but if you can't afford to go there just yet (just like me) you can still explore other cities which have the same fun atmosphere as in Trentino. This December I'd like to post some of my favorite places that hold Special Christmas Markets. The first one I'd like to show you is the Christmas Market in Vicenza.

Vicenza is a city in Northeastern Italy that is 1,5 hours away from Venice by Car. This visit is the third time for us, as we have explored this Palladio City like 3 times, once in the summer and others times in Spring. Vicenza, as I remember, is not as big as cities like Venice, Milan or Verona but it is pretty much a vibrant metropolitan city.

We were always having a good time here, For our last 3 previous visits, we did a picnic in one of its parks. Nice fresh air, good people, and even good food. This time we came in Winter just to know how beautiful could be the Christmas atmosphere.
We arrived in Vicenza after lunch and that day the sun was shining so bright yet the temperature was super chilly. For me, it's such a good combination, with a good capottino, a hat, and gloves, you are doing fine.

The first thing you see when you arrived at the center of the city would be a red carpet that, of course, leads to the Mercatino di Natale in Piazza San Lorenzo.

Vicenza's Christmas Market
The Schedule

Street musicians and an act of kindness

Everybody is so excited about Christmas Markets in Italy, it's one of the time you could find artisans' hand-made kinds of stuff or if you are lucky you would find typical food and wine but above all, Christmas Market is a place you can hang around with friends and family.

I have to be honest, I've never bought anything from a special market, at least maybe not yet. I found the prices are ridiculous and I could find something similar in the supermarkets. Italians know how to put price tags on everything.

I noticed, the stalls in this market are limited, I supposed it might be because it's a bit early. Usually, a week before Christmas, all will be full.

So, I saw many things: hand-made jewelry, Chrismas cards, hand-made soap, some typical food and wine (I don't exactly what) and some food stalls.

We looked around then realize we don't wanna buy anything but just want to do sightseeing. We then head to the center: Piazza Dei Signori and of course Renaissance Palladiana.

Ah yes, we saw a musical performance by a group of street musicians too, and they were awesome!

While in Piazza dei Signori

That Christmas tree is huge!

There was a performance by Cancer Foundation too

just so magical

Typical tourist pose

Renaissance Palladiana
At the time we arrived in the main piazza of Vicenza, Piazza dei Signori, it was dimmed-light, and it was the perfect time to see the beauty of Christmas lights and ornaments.

So beautiful and magical at the same time! Dario couldn't keep his eyes off the lights, he pointed here and there...

Christmas is coming, and buone feste da Vicenza!

Winter Joy Tips: How to Stay Flu-Free during The Festive Season

Winter is coming incredibly quick, as in Italy alone, it's like dropping 5 degrees in a blink of an eye. For us, special needs parents, Winter can mean a higher risk of hospitalization triggered by virus and bacteria as our kids are the vulnerable ones. Our kids get sick a lot easier than their peers and that's why we need certain tips to keep the germs away. These germs are ways for common cold and influenza, we need to keep them at bay.

Influenza affects millions of people around the world as yearly outbreaks happen in Northern and Southern Hemisphere during winter and at any time of the year around the Equator. It is responsible for 200.000 - 500.000 death each year which takes a toll mostly on elderly people, babies and kids, and those with immune problems. Influenza virus is also responsible for many deathly pandemics around the world.

I have some tips to prevent cold and influenza that I got from research and Dario's immunologist. As you all know, Dario doesn't have thymus gland so his immune system actually works below the normal level, he is prone to get the certain illness from bacteria and virus. These tips, so far, work out really well. I'll have to share it with you..
  1. Get flu shots, You may get bored to listen to this but it really works. Hesitation won't prevent you from flu but flu shot will. No matter what is your health status, getting flu shot will reduce flu great risk to 80 percent, plus keeping your surroundings safe. You might never know, but by doing this you prevent those with the immune-compromised syndrome to get sick.
  2. Spray your nose regularly. Everyone might get to sneeze to kick out germs from the nose, but sometimes it's not enough, especially for babies and kids. The only thing that can keep your nose germ-free is nasal spray (yes, there are for babies too) which is medicine free and extracted from the seawater (in Italian, siero di mare)
  3. Take daily vitamin D and Iron. Forget your multivitamins, those are scams, the ones that you should take to prevent cold and flu are Vitamin D and Iron, consult your physician if you aren't sure about the dosage, or you can simply ask a pharmacist near you, she/he might give you good suggestions.
  4. Maintain Hygiene. sounds clichè but maintaining cleanliness of you yourself and the rest of family members will make a lot of difference. My favorite thing to do is adding disinfectants in all my household cleaners even in my detergent. Another thing to do is frequently open your windows to let some fresh air comes in and prevent some germs getting stuck around the house.
  5. Wash your hands. Wash wash wash, everytime you touch something especially when you are outside, wash your hands with warm water and soap or you might want to get gel sanitizer if you can't manage to get water. Trust me, it works. Anyway, try to rub the gel sanitizer all over your palm, and do it gently. Don't do it in hurry, take your time, germs are quite something to kill too though!
  6. Reduce Social life. Yup, The more you get in touch with people, the higher risk you have to get certain virus and bacteria. People might not show obvious symptoms that they got cold or virus or even they might have thought their flu is over. The fact is, bodies still carry virus/bacteria up to three weeks, and for sure they are highly contagious.
  7. Get enough sleep. Your immune system works better when you get enough rest. Try to get 8 hours of sleeping not less or more. You'll feel better as your lymphocytes work in maximum level.
  8. Drink your lemons. Lemon has anti-bacteria elements, it boosts the immune system as well. It is also known for its ability to relieve a sore throat. Try to drink some lemons whether in your tea or even mineral water. You'll feel the difference.
  9. Exercise. Some experts point out that exercise is really a great deal for your body, it helps your body to boost its maximum performance especially in fighting unwanted and dangerous germs. If you are not into exercise, try to do jogging or biking instead. The most important thing, don't skip it!
  10. Dress well. As the Norwegians said "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing" They got it right, try not to look at what people are wearing but feel what you have to wear instead. I mean, it can be that some people don't feel the same amount of cold as you do so they might wear something rather light. Do not follow them, follow your guts. If you think it's cold or really cold, dress accordingly!
  11. Don't Stress out. Stress will weaken your immune system. Try to relax and enjoy your hot chocolate while you can, Christmas is coming!
These tips can be applied to all family members with a bit of adjustment for exercise point, kids don't exercise, do they? so maybe you can design an activity where they can move their bodies and have some fun at the same time.
May the odds be ever in your favor!

Gene-editing with CRISPR-Cas9 : Why Special Needs Parents Should be Happy about this

Gene-editing with molecular scissors CRISPR-Cas9 has been a hot topic these past 2 weeks thanks to viral news about one Chinese scientist who claimed to have succeeded in gene-editing a set of twin girls and the third potential baby with this so-called a breakthrough medical technology.

He Jianku, a Chinese researcher and scientist has sparked international outcry about the ethical concerns of using medical technology to edit human's DNA which could potentially bring harm than good. His claim over the world first gene-edited babies was overly judged as "monstrous", "unconscionable", and "premature".

The fact that He Jianku used CRISPR-Cas9 technology to tweak DNA of Human Embryos during in Vitro fertilization has sparked outrage that the world would see gene-edited babies for the first time in history.

Is it that bad?
I don't think so, and I have to make myself clear that I am pro to gene-editing. with all my heart.
Before judging me, let's take a look some facts about CRISPR-Cas9 and He's experiment itself.

FYI, this is not the first time I talked about CRISPR-Cas9. My previous post about 22q awareness, I brought up some hope on this medical technology that one day, I hope we can edit out offspring genes into the perfect one, without any possibility of DNA mutation such as genetic/chromosome disorder.

Here we go, so if you are new to this topic, grab some snacks because you are about to read such an in-depth article.

What is CRISPR-Cas9?
Genome editing technology or some may call it gene editing is a collection of technologies that enable scientists to change an organism's DNA (in sequence). These so-called medical breakthrough technologies allow genetic material to be added, removed, or even altered at particular locations in the genome. Approaches to gene editing have been developed over time, a recent one we might know as CRISPR-Cas9. CRISPR-Cas 9 which stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats cheered as the most versatile and the simplest and precise method of genetic manipulation.

How was it developed?
CRISPR-Cas9 was adapted from a genome editing system in some bacteria which happens naturally when they respond to invading pathogens like a virus. Bacteria capture snippets of DNA from invading virus and use them to create DNA segments known as CRISPR arrays. These arrays allow bacteria to 'remember' a tiny bit of the viruses or related ones just in case the viruses attack again.
So, if the virus attacks again, the bacteria produce RNA segments from the CRISPR arrays to target the viruses' DNA, bacteria use Cas9 or a similar enzyme to cut the DNA apart, which eventually disables the virus.

The CRISPR-Cas9 system works pretty much the same in the lab. Scientists create a small piece of RNA with a short"guide" sequence that attaches to a specific target sequence of DNA in a genome. The RNA also binds to the Cas9 enzyme. As in bacteria, the modified RNA is used to recognize the DNA sequence, and the Cas9 enzyme cuts the DNA at the targeted location. Although Cas9 is the enzyme that is used most often, other enzymes (e.g Cpf1) can also be used. Once the DNA is cut, researchers use the cell's own DNA repair machinery to add or delete pieces of genetic material or to make changes to the DNA by replacing an existing segment with a customized DNA sequence.

Genome editing is really promising for the interest in the prevention and treatment of human diseases. By far, scientists have done genome editing with CRISPR-Cas9 to understand diseases using mainly isolated human cells and animal models. They are still working to decide whether or not this technology safe and effective for use in people. It is being so much explored in research on various diseases and medical conditions that have genetic components including single-gene disorders like hemophilia, sickle cell disease, and cystic fibrosis. It is also holds promising success to prevent and treat more complex disease like cancer, heart disease, mental illness and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

Ethical and safety concerns of using CRISPR-Cas9 arise as this technology can be used to alter human genomes especially when it made changes to genes in egg or sperm cells (germline cells). Changes in germline cells or in the genes of an embryo could be passed to the future generations. This, according to some scientists, could lead to an enhancement of normal human traits and can be a tool for 'designer babies' that until now is still illegal in most countries.

He's experiment
As everyone from the common people to scientists, medics and even scholars condemned this experiment as 'bad decision', He himself defends this experiment by saying that his main objective was to disable the gene that is responsible for HIV for the fact that the father of twin girls suffered from HIV. CRISPR-Cas9 can be used to cripple and prevent HIV by disabling gene CCR5. He later stated that CCR5 is well-studied genetic mutation so that the use of CRISPR-Cas9 can be safe enough, he didn't want to see the twin girls suffer like the father.

The whole world can condemn He's experiment but I can see something genuine from his point of view. The scientific community is the one that complains much about this and that while at the same time they have had the technology to make some diseases disappear from the earth. This CRISPR-Cas9 technology is by far the most promising medical breakthrough to help families whose kids are in constant pain of having genetic/chromosome disease, whose kids suffer every day while bills stack up, whose kids see darkness in terms of having their own future generation one day, afraid that their kids will suffer like they did. We all know that genetic mutation or genetic/chromosome disorder are passed on to the future generation with a percentage like 50 percent and above. I myself, as a mother who has a son with genetic/chromosome disorder which is 'de novo' (new case, not hereditary), sometimes ponder if my grandkids would suffer the same thing as Dario and I said to myself, hell no, I wouldn't want to see them suffer like that. For us, special needs parents, this technology bring the hope of having perfectly healthy offsprings.

Some people (common people, who know nothing about special needs or genetic/chromosome mutation/disorder) are fast in calling this experiment as 'reckless' or as 'taboo' without thinking its significance first. They point out that one day this technology can be a tool to design the babies traits and trigger inequality. For me, having kids that crippled by genetic mutation has been unequal enough, if I could I'd like to make a reverse role or let these people walk on my shoes. Not that I am not thankful but as a parent, a mother, you would constantly be seeking a way to make your kids' lives better. Science is your only hope.

bottom line
I realize that He's experiment seems a bit immature and not safe enough at the moment (some scientists said that, this technology can trigger cancer in that CRISPR-edited cells inadvertently) but let's not assume that He wants to design babies instead of helping them. What I see through his videos that he pretty much wished to help out families whose kids suffer from genetic disease "Please remember that while there may be vocal critics, there are many silent families who have seen a child suffer from genetic disease and should not have to suffer that pain again". "They may not be the director of an ethics center quoted by The New York Times, but they are no less authorities on what is right and wrong- because it's their life on the line."

Anyhow, I agree that maybe we should take that 'take it slow' approach in applying this technology but I don't think we should be waiting really long, I mean, the scientific community should also be taking us (special needs parents) into account that we can't wait really long, we don't have another life to wait for this, we want perfectly healthy grandkids too.

Imagine that one day, medics could make up the missing genes in chromosome 22, we would see fewer babies suffer from Cardiopathy, Pulmonary anomalies, or other life-threatening congenital defects. The world would see more happiness.

Until then,

"Don't judge what you don't understand"

Un Giorno della Visita : A Visit Day to The Immunologist

"Developmental delays are commas not period, your child can still get there"

For the past 3 years, Dario has done more than six times of immunological visit as a part of follow-up control of his 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. On average he had to do a blood test and a visit with an immunologist every 6 months. This year, his immunologist said, he needs a control and visits only once in a year.

Yesterday, we went to Padua (Padova) University hospital to do this immunological visit as a part of his DiGeorge Syndrome care management protocol. This visit, this time, is quite something because we had a lot to talk related to his developmental delays and the fact that one neuropsychiatrist stated that Dario seems to develop autistic behavior.

Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder or Kids diagnosed with autistic behavior might be parents' worst nightmare, but to be honest, for me it's not that bad. Maybe I have been through a lot or maybe I expected the worst but Autism has never scared me in any way. For me Autism might indicate that one's brain works differently than the rest of us, nothing more but for some people especially in my home country Indonesia, Autism might mean 'retarded' some even associate that term with down syndrome or with any other syndrome they never heard of.

That's why when I talked to my mom about our neuropsychiatrist visit, she said "what? no way, Dario is not stupid!" oh well now I know how common people stigmatize Autism and how this leads to marginalization.

Back to Dario's story, I eagerly told the immunologist that this statement 'Dario might develop Autism in the future' had made me anxious, I just want the right or such definitive answer. I don't like the status quo, and this is important for me, to determine my next step.

"That's such a piece of wrong information, I don't see Dario exhibits any behavior that leads to it," she said
"People who don't know this syndrome, much prefer to label instead of admitting that they don't know anything related to this syndrome"
"This statement is as dumb as saying that someone might seem to develop rash or fever in the future which is, in reality, nobody could tell and it is as vague as it sounds," she said furiously
"Kids with DiGeorge Syndrome might have behavior manifestation that looks like autism but in fact, it is not. We can't put behavioral issues in the same place as Autism because they are bloody different. And for your child case, For God's sake, he has through a hell lot of time and he is still weak. He spent most of his time on the hospital bed, that's why he got some delays and I see that as a normal thing. He would surely catch up, slowly but surely and once he is feeling stronger, he'll be like other normal kids." she summed up

"But you should keep in mind, that you have to continue his therapies and give him as much stimulation as you can".
"Set goals, assess, and evaluate his improvements. If you don't see any improvements, change therapists". She concluded.

This conversation has opened up my mind a bit and I realized again that my son's rare disease could make a confusion even amongst medics.

"So, I don't have to worry anymore about ASD?" I continued
"Don't let people put you down and make you anxious, information bias can even come from the medics and your job is to consult it to the experts," she said

I came out from the clinic with a warm heart, I am so thankful that Dario has been followed by a DiGeorge syndrome expert and I could consult anything that bothers me.
From this visit we know as well that Dario immune system is getting better yet going to school is still too much for him, so postponing school till Spring is really a good idea.

After the visit, we took a stroll around Padova Centro and this time Dario could walk longer that he used to (Did I inform you that Dario performs better in winter than Summer because the heat exhausts him easily?)

Plus, he ate a lot, seems like the visit made him starve, He finished a bowl full of Udon Noodles with stir-fried meat and a half bowl of Jasmine Rice with Thai sweet curry. Ah, I am so grateful...
